Unwanted Robocalls
Companies increasingly use sophisticated automated dialing equipment such as predicative dialers to connect live operators or prerecorded voice messages to consumers. These "robocalls" are an intrusive and annoying violation of consumers' privacy because most people today carry their telephones everywhere they go.
Fortunately, the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and similar state laws like the Washington Consumer Protection Act (e.g., see RCW 80.36.400) regulate the use of automated telephone equipment to call consumers without their prior, express consent. Companies that violate these laws can be liable to consumers for $500 or more in statutory damages for each robocall made.
